Some places you visit; others you carry. Fuerteventura, the oldest of the Canary Islands, rose from fire barely a hundred kilometers off the African coast, and photographer [Raoul Iacometti](https://www.instagram.com/raoul%5Fi/?ref=spotlight.adancemag.com) has carried it since the late 1980s, through three decades of work elsewhere. Dancer [Rebecca Erroi](https://www.instagram.com/rebeccaerroi/?ref=spotlight.adancemag.com) came to it without that history. Trained in Milan and San Francisco, she is used to stages that can be constructed anywhere and struck overnight. The island is nothing like a stage, it is a living ecosystem that responds.

In 2022, the two set out with lengths of cloth to test what the landscape allows the body to say. In these high-contrast monochrome frames, the island is an active participant, where the wind keeps its own schedule, shaping everything on its way. A dancer in this wind is subject to the same forces as the rock and the sea. The cloth makes those forces visible, since fabric has no intention of its own; it takes the shape the air gives it, and once Erroi is wrapped in it, her movement is no longer hers alone, it is worked out with the wind. Iacometti, who has known this island for decades, anticipates the exchange and is ready when it peaks, the body and the island working out their terms together until they read as a single, continuous breath.

The project is called [*WIND \[eternal movement\]*](https://new.express.adobe.com/webpage/7Dqm4gVojJzR6?ref=spotlight.adancemag.com), and it is almost literal. The wind on Fuerteventura rarely lets up, so each frame is one moment in an exchange that was already under way and carries on after the shutter closes.
